Sixteen-year-old Dedee Truitt leaves her home in Louisiana after her stepfather's funeral and moves in with her half-brother Bill, an English teacher living in Indiana. Bill is gay and has been left financially comfortable by his late partner, and he is trying to rebuild his life with a new boyfriend, Matt. Dedee's arrival unsettles the household: Bill's close friend Lucia distrusts the girl, and her suspicions are borne out when Dedee seduces Matt. When Dedee announces she is pregnant, the already strained relationships among the three reach a breaking point.
