Ginger Snaps
Short description
Ginger Snaps follows two teenage sisters in the suburban town of Bailey Downs. Ginger and Brigitte are inseparable outcasts who share a taste for the macabre and spend their time staging gruesome scenes on video. On the night Ginger gets her first period, a creature attacks her in the woods. Her wounds close with unnatural speed, but she soon begins to change: her moods darken, her body alters and her interest in boys turns predatory. Brigitte, watching her sister slip away, sets out to find a way to stop the transformation before it runs its course.
Directed by John Fawcett from a screenplay by Karen Walton, the film was his first feature and was followed in his filmography by Lucky Girl and The Dark. Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins play Ginger and Brigitte, with Kris Lemche as Sam, Mimi Rogers as the sisters' mother Pamela, Jesse Moss as Jason McCardy and Danielle Hampton as Trina Sinclair. It was produced by Karen Lee Hall and Steven Hoban on a budget of about 5 million US dollars.
Reception places the film well above average for its genre. Its critics' rating of 7.3/10 from 62 reviews is higher than its IMDb score of 6.8/10 from around 57,000 votes and its TMDB rating of 6.9/10 from roughly a thousand votes, suggesting stronger approval among reviewers than among the wider audience. It runs 108 minutes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming took place in Canada, in the suburbs of Toronto, and lasted approximately 6 weeks – from October 25 to December 6, 1999.
- The idea for this film came to director John Fawcett a long time ago, and the first steps towards its realization were taken in January 1995, when he met with screenwriter Karen Walton. The film could have been released as early as 1998, but funding problems and organizational difficulties pushed back the release date by another two years.
- Brigitte's hair is actually a wig, which we can see in the film's finale. The wig slips over her eyes as Brigitte runs down the stairs looking for Sam.
