Short description

A Las Vegas casino owner devises an unusual form of entertainment for his richest clients. He picks several ordinary people and gives them each a chance to claim two million dollars locked in a storage locker far away, reaching the money first. Only the owner and his wealthy guests, who watch every step and place their own bets on the outcome, know the full setup. The contestants are free to do whatever it takes to win, since the race has no rules. The story follows the racers as they cross the desert toward the prize while the casino's patrons track them like specimens.

Rat Race was released in August 2001. Jerry Zucker directed it from a screenplay by Andy Breckman, with Sean Daniel and Janet Zucker producing, and it is the sixth film Zucker directed, arriving after First Knight in 1995. The large cast includes Cuba Gooding Jr., Breckin Meyer, Lanei Chapman, Amy Smart, Seth Green and Gloria Allred among 115 credited performers.

The film cost about 48 million dollars and took in roughly 85 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from around 130,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3/10 from about 2,000 votes; a film critics' rating of 5.4/10 comes from 129 reviews. A credited crew of 206 worked on the production.

What's left behind the scenes

  • One of the actors playing Vince Vieluf is absent from the posters and other promotional materials. This happened due to his agent, who failed to agree with the filmmakers on where his client's name would be listed. Vieluf subsequently parted ways with this agent.
  • Initially, it was intended that Rowan Atkinson would play not an Italian tourist, but a Chinese diplomat.
