A Guilty Conscience follows Adrian Lam, a Hong Kong lawyer whose careless handling of a high-profile murder case sends an innocent woman to prison. Realising his mistake, he and his colleagues set out to clear her name, only to find themselves up against a wealthy and powerful family determined to keep the truth buried.
The film marks Jack Ng Wai-Lun's first turn as director, having co-written the screenplay with Jay Cheung Wan-Ching. Dayo Wong leads the cast as Adrian Lam, with Louise Wong, Tse Kwan-Ho, Renci Yeung and DeeGor Ho among the forty-nine credited performers. Bill Kong Chi-Keung and Ivy Ho Wan-Ming produced the Hong Kong and mainland China co-production, which mixes crime and mystery with comedic and dramatic elements. It runs 133 minutes. Ng went on to direct Night King and its director's cut, making this the earliest of the three features he has directed.
Made for a modest budget of around 3 million US dollars, the film returned roughly 10 million US dollars worldwide, a strong multiple of its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 from about 2,300 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from a much smaller pool of around 62 votes. The wider sample on IMDb points to a generally favourable response, though the two figures come from very different numbers of users.
