El Conde reimagines Augusto Pinochet as a vampire who has survived for around 250 years, having arrived in Chile from Europe and risen through the army under an assumed name. Now living in a decaying family estate in the country's far south, he has grown tired of his existence and decides to stop drinking human blood so that he can finally die for good. The relatives circling him, however, have their own reasons for keeping him alive and will not let him go quietly.
Pablo Larraín directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Guillermo Calderón. It is a Chilean production from Fabula, made for about 10 million USD with Juan de Dios Larraín and Rocío Jadue producing. It followed Ema, Spencer and a run of films going back to Tony Manero, and came before Maria and My Sad Dead. Jaime Vadell plays the count, with Gloria Münchmeyer, Alfredo Castro, Paula Luchsinger, Stella Gonet and Catalina Guerra among the 36 credited cast; 93 crew are credited.
Treated as a dark satire that mixes horror and fantasy with comedy and drama, the film runs 111 minutes. On IMDb it holds 6.3/10 from roughly 16,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1/10 from around 368 votes. A critics' score of 7.1/10 from 117 reviews places reviewers noticeably above the general audience.
