Short description

Pursy Will, a restless young woman, returns to her hometown of New Orleans after learning of the death of her mother, from whom she had long been estranged. Arriving too late for the funeral, she expects to claim the house she inherited and move on. Instead she finds two men already living there: Bobby Long, a former literature professor whose drinking has derailed his life, and Lawson Pines, a younger man working on Bobby's biography. The house turns out to have been left to all three of them, and none of the men shows any intention of leaving.

Shainee Gabel directed and wrote the screenplay, which follows the uneasy household the three form and the questions Pursy begins to ask about the mother she barely knew. John Travolta plays Bobby, Scarlett Johansson plays Pursy, and Gabriel Macht plays Lawson, with Deborah Kara Unger, Dane Rhodes and David Jensen among a credited cast of 22. The film runs 119 minutes.

Released in 2004, the drama earned about 2 million dollars worldwide against a production backed by several independent companies. On IMDb it holds a 5.5 rating from 98 reviews, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from 441 votes, a gap suggesting that general viewers responded more warmly than critics did to Gabel's first feature as director.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the scene where the main character is about to leave the trailer, she is wearing shorts. A second later, after she passes through the doorway, she is already wearing jeans.
  • At the very beginning of the film, during the opening credits, there is a continuity error. John Travolta's character is walking down the street wearing a boot on his right foot and a slipper on his left. When he reaches the cemetery, the boot and slipper have switched feet.
  • About halfway through filming, the project ran into financial difficulties. Several extras were invited to the set in New Orleans and then sent home without pay because the scenes they were in were cut during editing. The management of some stores in New Orleans complained that they received back clothing items worth thousands of dollars that were no longer needed because the scenes in which these items were supposed to be filmed were never shot.
