The Great Mouse Detective

Set in late nineteenth-century London, this animated mystery centres on Basil of Baker Street, a mouse detective who takes after Sherlock Holmes. When a young mouse named Olivia Flaversham comes to him for help, he and his companion Dr. Dawson set out to find her missing father, a well-known toymaker. The trail leads them to Basil's longstanding adversary, the criminal Professor Ratigan, and to a scheme that Basil must unravel with the aid of Dawson and the dog Toby.

The film was directed by Ron Clements, John Musker, Burny Mattinson and David Michener, with Clements, Musker and Vance Gerry writing the screenplay and Ron Miller and Mattinson producing. It stands first in the directing careers of Clements and Musker, ahead of the run of animated features they went on to make together. The voice cast includes Barrie Ingham, Vincent Price, Val Bettin, Susanne Pollatschek, Candy Candido and Diana Chesney.

Made for about fourteen million dollars and released in July 1986, it took roughly thirty-nine million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from around fifty-nine thousand votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7 out of 10 from more than eighteen hundred votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 out of 10 from twenty-eight reviews places it close to the audience scores.
