What's left behind the scenes

  • Matthew Morrison, who plays William Schuster, is only four years older than Harry Shum Jr. (Mike Chang), Cory Monteith (Finn Hudson), and Mark Salling (Noah Puckerman), who play his students.
  • Lea Michele was the first actress cast in the series.
  • On the day her auditions were scheduled, Lea Michele got into a car accident right outside the studio building. She arrived at the audition while still picking shards of glass from her hair.
  • During filming, Kevin McHale would constantly tap his foot to the beat of the music. Several scenes even had to be reshot because the tapping was too loud.
  • Darren Criss landed the role of Blaine, although he had originally auditioned for the role of Finn.
  • It was initially intended that Gwyneth Paltrow would appear in only one episode of the second season; however, she was so well-received by both audiences and critics that her role was expanded into subsequent seasons, and the actress won an Emmy Award for her work on the series.
  • Dianna Agron was cast as Quinn after filming had already begun.
  • Instead of traditional auditions, applicants were required to submit a video of themselves singing; however, Cory Monteith (1982-2013) did not sing, but instead mimed playing the drums. The producers liked the actor so much that they contacted his agent to invite Monteith to Los Angeles for an in-person audition.
  • The character of Kurt was written specifically for Chris Colfer, who had originally auditioned for the role of Artie.
  • Heather Morris (who previously worked as a backup dancer during Beyoncé's tour) was cast in the role of Brittany.
  • Kevin McHale is the only actor to appear in every single episode from the first through the fourth seasons.
  • For a while, the series unfolded without Brittany's participation, as the actress playing the role, Heather Morris, was expecting a baby.
  • To a large extent, the production featured unknown actors, as the creators of the series had intended. Often, the auditions were attended by young people who had simply walked in off the street to try their luck in cinema.
  • The general idea for the series was proposed by producer and screenwriter Ian Brennan, who based it on memories of his own participation in a school choir. Initially, it was intended to be a film rather than a series. Brennan wrote the first draft of the script in August 2005, but producers were not interested at the time. A friend of Brennan's, who worked as a television producer, showed the script to Ryan Murphy, with whom he attended the same gym. Murphy had once sung in a choir himself, so the theme resonated with him. Murphy and Brad Falchuk thought the project would be better as a series, after which the three of them met and set to work rewriting the script. The revised script was submitted to the Fox network, where it was immediately welcomed.
