What's left behind the scenes

  • In Season 6, Timothy Olyphant arranged for a hat to be made for Jonathan Tucker's character with the intention of keeping it for himself after filming ended. It bore a resemblance to the 'Stratoliner fedora'—a classic fedora from the Stetson brand that was no longer in production.
  • The character of Earl Givens, played by Raymond J. Barry, was introduced into the series' script. In Elmore Leonard's original story, the protagonist's father had died some time ago from pneumoconiosis, caused by long-term inhalation of coal dust.
  • Throughout the series, the characters regularly drink Kentucky bourbon. The props department would drain real bourbon from the bottles and replace it with diluted diet cola.
  • Initially, Walton Goggins, who was born in Alabama and raised in Georgia, refused to play Boyd Crowder. He changed his mind and appeared in the project's pilot episode as a favor to Timothy Olyphant (who played his son, Raylan Givens), with whom he had been introduced by mutual friends. Goggins' character died at the end of the pilot, as he does in the literary source material. However, Crowder proved popular with audiences during preview screenings, and the episode's finale was reshot so that the character remained alive.
  • According to some of the actors, the working atmosphere on the set of the series differed significantly from what they were usually accustomed to. The writers were always ready to listen to an interesting suggestion and would sometimes even halt the filming process to discuss a new nuance of a scene proposed by the actors.
  • Joseph Lyle Taylor originally auditioned for the role of the middle Bennett brother, Dickie, and received positive feedback, but was later replaced by Jeremy Davis. Joseph was instead cast as the eldest brother, Doyle Bennett.
  • In the first episode of season 5, when the car crashes at the 35-minute mark, the glass on the front passenger door can be seen shattering. A few seconds later, the glass is intact again.
  • In the pizzeria scene in the second episode of season six, Eva intentionally pours coffee on herself. When the shot changes, the stain on her shirt also shifts from her chest to her collar.
