What's left behind the scenes

  • Ensign Samantha Wildman is named after a girl who died tragically, whose organs were used with her family's permission to save the life of screenwriter Jimmy Diggs' wife. During her life, the girl loved animals dearly, which is why Wildman was made the head of the xenobiology department in the series.
  • During the filming of the 4th season, actress Roxanne Dawson became pregnant. A joke quickly spread among the cast and crew that her pregnancy would affect Robert Duncan McNeill the most, as he frequently appeared on screen with her. This was because Dawson's and McNeill's characters were in a romantic relationship, and McNeill's own wife was expecting a child at the time. Thus, whether he was on set or at home, he had to deal with a pregnant woman in both places.
  • Only six actors played the same characters across three different series in the Star Trek franchise: Jonathan Frakes (William T. Riker), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi), Armin Shimerman (Quark), John de Lancie (Q), Michael Ansara (Kang), and Richard Poe (Gul Evek). This is the only series in which all six appeared.
  • In many series set in the Star Trek universe, the number 47 periodically appears—on computer screens, in serial numbers, dates, and so on. This tradition was started by writer and producer Joe Menosky, and other members of the production team picked it up. According to Menosky, he chose this number because, back when he was a student, his mathematics professor Donald Bentley jokingly proved that every single number equals 47.
  • Robert Beltran, who played Chakotay, later recalled his work on the series with warmth, although during filming it was common knowledge that he was essentially forcing himself to do it. Beltran constantly demanded a pay raise, hoping that the show's writers would get tired of it and kill off his character at some point. Contrary to the actor's expectations, his salary was increased as requested, and he remained in the series until the very end.
  • The letter combination 'X' (KS) is always present in the names of all Talaxians and the names of places on their planet—Nilix, Dexa, Brax, Alixia, Talax, Rinax, etc.
  • Actress Jeri Ryan hated her character Seven of Nine's skin-tight costume so much that she burned it after filming ended.
  • Garret Wang cannot play the clarinet. To look convincing on screen when his character plays, Wang specifically memorized the finger movements for each particular melody.
