What's left behind the scenes
- In the scene with the wasp nest on the hotel roof, several wasps were added to the shot using computer graphics.
- The story of Donner and those who traveled with him is based on real events. It concerns American pioneers who set out for California in May 1846. Due to a series of misfortunes and mistakes, the group was forced to spend the winter of 1846-1847 in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Only 48 of the 87 group members reached California.
- When Jack speaks over the radio with his long-dead father, actor Stephen Weber develops a nosebleed. This was not in the script and happened spontaneously.
