What's left behind the scenes

In the scene with the wasp nest on the hotel roof, several wasps were added to the shot using computer graphics.
When Jack speaks over the radio with his long-dead father, actor Stephen Weber develops a nosebleed. This was not in the script and happened spontaneously.
The story of Donner and those who traveled with him is based on real events. It concerns American pioneers who set out for California in May 1846. Due to a series of misfortunes and mistakes, the group was forced to spend the winter of 1846-1847 in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Only 48 of the 87 group members reached California.
