What's left behind the scenes

  • It was originally intended that Angel would actually die at the end of the second season, but Joss Whedon was approached with a proposal to film a spin-off, and Angel was brought back to life in the third season for the creation of the series 'Angel' (1999-2004).
  • One of the first series to use the phrase "Google it." The line was spoken by Willow, played by Alyson Hannigan.
  • Joss Whedon wanted the vampires to look like ordinary, normal people until it was time to feed, so applying the makeup before filming took an hour and 20 minutes, and it took just as long to remove it afterward.
  • The actors disliked filming the library scenes because there was so much fussing with the set dressing, which took up a lot of time; so when the library blew up in the plot, it became a reason for a small celebration.
  • According to director and writer Joss Whedon, the idea to create "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was inspired by the numerous horror movies he had seen, in which the helpless young blonde almost always dies first. At some point, Whedon decided that young blondes deserved a better fate.
  • In the unreleased pilot of the series, the role of Willow was played by another actress, Riff Regan, but they eventually decided to replace her with Alyson Hannigan.
  • James Marsters read only the parts of the script that pertained directly to his character. As a fan of the project, he did not want to spoil the experience by finding out all the plot twists in advance.
  • Actor Nicholas Brendon has a twin brother. In the episode where Xander was split in two, the actor's brother played the second half. Additionally, his brother filled in for the actor on set a couple of times when he was sick.
  • The show's creators told Nicholas Brendon to stop going to the gym so that his character would not look too muscular.
  • Katie Holmes and Selma Blair auditioned for the role of Buffy.
  • In the third season, Seth Green disliked spending the entire day on set when his character only had a couple of lines for the whole episode.
  • Ryan Reynolds was originally cast as Xander Harris. The role subsequently went to Nicholas Brendon.
  • Spike's coat was purchased from an expensive store for $2,000; to give the garment the appropriate look, it was thrown onto the asphalt and run over by a truck several times.
  • According to Alyson Hannigan, at the very beginning of filming, Joss Whedon asked her, Charisma Carpenter, and Sarah Michelle Gellar (all three actresses are dark-haired) who wanted to play the redhead, and Hannigan said she did.
  • It is known that Joss Whedon plans plotlines well in advance, so hints at Dawn's return are present as early as the third season, while she herself does not appear until the fifth.
  • The London accent spoken by Spike was coached for James Marsters by Anthony Head. In the actor's own speech, the London accent is noticeably more distinct than it is in the speech of his character.
