What's left behind the scenes

  • The theatrical version has a runtime of 237 minutes.
  • Robert Powell's eyes were subtly lined with blue on the upper lid and white on the lower. This emphasized the piercing blue of his eyes and the penetrating nature of his gaze, which, combined with infrequent blinking, gave his character a surreal and supernatural quality.
  • The actors playing Jesus rarely blink in the film. This was insisted upon by director Franco Zeffirelli (1923-2019). As a child in the temple, Jesus blinks only twice on screen; as an adult, only once.
  • Robert Powell looked exactly like Jesus in the film, and every time he stepped out of the dressing room in costume, the swearing and profanity on the set would fall silent.
  • Before filming the crucifixion scene, Robert Powell ate nothing but cheese for 12 days to look emaciated, as if from imprisonment and torture.
  • During filming in Tunisia, R2-D2 once wandered onto the set. 'Star Wars' (George Lucas, 1977) was being filmed nearby, and when R2-D2 was supposed to disappear behind the dunes according to the script, he did so, but the remote control malfunctioned. The robot didn't stop on command, continued moving, and ended up on the set of 'Jesus of Nazareth'.
