What's left behind the scenes

  • Laurence Olivier was offered two roles: Lord Marchmain, Sebastian's father, and Edward Ryder, Charles's father. Olivier chose to play Lord Marchmain, and the role of Edward Ryder went to John Gielgud. Laurence Olivier later regretted his choice, as he believed the character of Edward Ryder was much stronger and more interesting.
  • Sebastian's teddy bear, Aloysius, has a real-life prototype. A teddy bear named Archie belonged to John Betjeman, an Oxford friend of Evelyn Waugh, the author of the novel 'Brideshead Revisited'.
  • The character of Cousin Jasper is based on Evelyn Waugh's own brother, Alec.
  • During a forced break in filming, some actors and producer Derek Grainger noticed that an important scene (Julia crying by the fountain at night) had been omitted from the script. It was decided that this episode should be included. The final version of the script was likely not written by the series writer John Mortimer, as Derek Grainger selected and inserted several other episodes and plotlines that were absent from the script but present in Evelyn Waugh's novel.
  • The storm scenes utilize footage that did not make it into the 1972 film 'The Poseidon Adventure'.
  • Production of 'Brideshead Revisited' in 1979 was halted for several months due to a strike by ITV technical staff. By the time filming resumed, director Michael Lindsay-Hogg was tied up with another contract, and Charles Sturridge was brought in to complete the series (specifically the scenes in Oxford and Howard Castle).
  • Howard Castle, used in many scenes as the Brideshead estate, belonged to George Howard, who at the time of filming was the chairman of the competing studio, the BBC. Despite this, Howard not only provided his castle for filming but also served as a consultant on English high society of the first half of the 20th century.
  • Initially, producer Derek Granger wanted Anthony Andrews to play the role of Charles and Jeremy Irons to play Sebastian. Andrews convinced Granger that Sebastian was his role and that he would perform it much better. Consequently, Anthony Andrews and Jeremy Irons swapped characters.
