What's left behind the scenes

  • It is implied that each episode is one hour long. In reality, three minutes are added to the clock during commercial breaks, and the final three minutes are used for advertisements, credits, and a preview of the next episode.
  • At the power plant, before Palmer delivers his speech, Jack happens to run into Jessica Abrams. During their conversation, she mentions Tracy Zinger, who told her that Jack and Teri had split up. Both characters are named after people who participated in the creation of the series.
  • Dennis Haysbert appeared in both the series and the film 'Far from Heaven' (2002) simultaneously.
  • Reiko Aylesworth originally auditioned for the role of Nina Myers.
  • Reiko Aylesworth also auditioned for the role of Kate Warner.
  • Paul Blackthorne, who played Sanders, originally auditioned for one of the antagonistic characters in the third season.
  • During the filming of the fourth season, a special six-minute episode was shot for the American DVD release of the third season, in which Jack loses his job at the Counter Terrorism Center and the main villain of the fourth season arrives in the US. This episode also includes a short scene between Jack and his new girlfriend.
  • During the filming of the fifth season, Kiefer Sutherland signed a contract for three more seasons.
  • Of all the series' antagonists, Mandy appears in the most seasons. She was present in the first three episodes of the first season, working for Ira Gaines. She then returned in the final episode of the second season, attempting to assassinate David Palmer. After that, she appeared in the last three episodes of the fourth season. Mandy was also supposed to appear in the fifth season, but she was replaced by another character at the very last moment.
  • The name of Harris Yulin, who played Roger Stanton in the second season, is mentioned in neither the opening nor the closing credits. This is because all actors who are not series regulars must be credited alongside one or two other actors. Harris demanded that his name appear on the screen alone. However, the producers refused, and he decided that his name should not be mentioned in the credits at all.
  • During the filming of the second season, Kiefer Sutherland injured his knee. Therefore, a short scene was added to the plot where Jack removes shrapnel from his leg to explain his limp.
  • Two episodes are filmed simultaneously over a period of 15 days.
  • In the second season, the writers had to add Tony Almeida's ankle injury to the plot after Carlos Bernard injured his ankle playing basketball between takes.
  • In the third season, shortly before Salazar and Bauer land in Mexico, an "Aeromexicana" airline plane appears on screen. This name is a combination of the two largest airlines in Mexico: "Aeromexico" and "Mexicana".
  • Originally, Gabriel Macht was supposed to play Chase Edmunds. However, the producers were so impressed by James Badge Dale's audition that they gave him the role and promised Gabriel one of the lead roles in the following season. The producers never fulfilled their promise.
  • Jack holds a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of California, as well as a master's degree in criminology and law from UC Berkeley. Kim Bauer graduated from Santa Monica College with a degree in computer programming. David Palmer earned a bachelor's degree in political economy from Georgetown University and a law degree from the University of Maryland. Tony Almeida holds a bachelor's degree in applied and computational science from San Diego State University and a master's degree in computer science from Stanford University; Sherry Palmer has a bachelor's degree in sociology from Georgetown University.
  • Each actor's contract contains a special clause stating that he/she must get a haircut every five days.
  • Work on a single season, including pre- and post-production, takes 10.5 months.
  • The first and sixth seasons feature a character named Milo Pressman (Eric Balfour). A character with the same name appeared in Stephen King's story 'The Body.' This story served as the basis for the film 'Stand by Me' (1986), in which Kiefer Sutherland played one of the roles.
  • While filming the series, the creators try to place all cameras at eye level to provide a higher level of realism.
  • Approximately 25 hours of raw footage are shot for each episode.
  • In the episode '4:00 PM – 5:00 PM' of the fifth season, Audrey says her name is Jane Espenson. Jane Espenson is a screenwriter who previously worked with David Fury (one of the producers of '24') on several projects developed by Joss Whedon.
  • The show's creators do not tell the actors what will happen in the next episode. The actors also do not know whether their character will die or survive.
  • Aside from Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), agent Aaron Pierce (Glenn Morshower) appears in the first seven seasons of the series.
  • Dennis Haysbert (David Palmer) and Penny Johnson (Sherrie Palmer) played supporting roles in Clint Eastwood's political thriller Absolute Power (1997).
  • In the fifth episode of the fourth season, a number can be clearly seen on Debbie's mobile phone display. This is a real phone number. Many fans of the series called this number after the episode premiered. Some reached the '24' answering machine, while others spoke with Joseph Hodge (set decorator), Kim Raver (Audrey Raines), and Carlos Bernard (Tony Almeida). According to Joseph, John Cassar (director) suggested this idea as a unique way of interacting with the show's fans. Joseph stated that approximately 80,000 people called the number during the first week.
  • According to her profile on the series' website, Teri Bauer (Leslie Hope) worked as a colorist at Dark Horse Comics.
  • The shot of the plane exploding was removed from the pilot episode of the series. Due to the events of September 11, the series' premiere was delayed by one month, and the pilot episode underwent significant re-editing.
  • The footage of the satellite in space in the pilot episode was borrowed from 'Enemy of the State' (1998).
  • Sarah Clarke was cast as Nina Myers on the day filming for the pilot episode began. The costume designers had no time to select the necessary wardrobe for Sarah's character, so in the pilot and all subsequent episodes of the first season, she wears her own clothes.
