Short description

Doc Martin is a British television comedy drama series starring Martin Clunes in the title role. It was created by Dominic Minghella after the character of Dr. Martin Bamford in the 2000 comedy film Saving Grace. The show is set in the fictional seaside village of Portwenn and filmed on location in the village of Port Isaac, Cornwall, England, with most interior scenes shot in a converted local barn. Five series aired between 2004 and 2011, together with a feature-length special that aired on Christmas Day 2006. Series 6 began airing on ITV on 2 September 2013.

What's left behind the scenes

  • One of the most popular British series on American television.
  • The fictional village of Portwenn was filmed in Port Isaac in the county of Cornwall.
  • Years sometimes pass between the filming of seasons, yet viewers remain fully convinced that, according to the plot, only a month has passed at most. The only exception was the case with Louisa, who left at the end of season 3 and returned at the beginning of season 4 with a noticeable baby bump.
  • The fictional Doctor Martin cannot stand dogs, whereas the actor who plays the role, Martin Clunes, absolutely loves them. He brought a dog to the set every single time.
  • The phrase that someone is a bit 'Bodmin' occasionally pops up in the series. Bodmin was the name of a town that once housed an asylum.
  • The main character's surname, Ellingham, is an anagram of the series creator's surname, Minghella.
  • The main character's entire wardrobe consists of suits and shirts. He can only be seen without a suit right before bed. He even wears a suit on weekends.
  • The series was filmed on location in Cornwall, but the sets for the main character's house were built near Port Isaac, where the walls could be moved for filming convenience.
  • Port Isaac in Cornwall was filmed to portray the fictional village of Portwenn during the off-season between tourist peaks.
