What's left behind the scenes

  • During filming in one of the buildings in downtown Los Angeles, a corpse—more accurately, the mummified remains of a resident—was actually discovered several floors below. A similar situation involving mummified remains is played out in the Season 3 episode 'Not What It Seems'.
  • Stella Bonassera owes her first name to Stella Kowalski from the drama 'A Streetcar Named Desire' (Elia Kazan, 1951), and her surname to Amerigo Bonassera, played by Salvatore Corsitto in Francis Ford Coppola's epic gangster drama 'The Godfather' (1972).
  • After the series premiered, some prosecutors began complaining about the so-called 'CSI Effect,' where jurors started demanding the impossible from forensic experts regarding the conclusions that could be drawn from certain pieces of evidence.
  • As with other spin-offs of the franchise, many of the cases described in this one are based on real events. For obvious reasons, the screenwriters simply made some changes (to names, locations, etc.) but left the most essential details (the cause of death and the method of committing the crime) untouched.
  • In real life, the equivalent department of the New York Police Department has a different name, and its employees do not engage in the activities shown in the series. Specifically, they do not interrogate suspects, issue search warrants, or make arrests. In the rank structure, they are below police officers, not the other way around as depicted on screen. Unlike police officers, they are civilian employees, so they simply do not have the authority to make arrests.
  • Tests and procedures that take only a few seconds of screen time actually require several days or even weeks.
  • Injuries and damage to human bodies in the series are often depicted using food products. For example, fried chicken skin is used to represent burns on the body.
