What's left behind the scenes

  • Several episodes feature clips from classic films watched by the crew of the starship Enterprise. For the most part, these are Paramount Pictures films, just as the series itself is: 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' (Sam Wood, 1943) and 'The Court Jester' (Melvin Frank and Norman Panama, 1955); however, one episode featured a clip from James Whale's horror film 'Frankenstein' (1931) by Universal Pictures.
  • During the opening credits, the takeoff of Cochrane's ship from Jonathan Frakes' film 'Star Trek: First Contact' (1996) is shown.
  • Costume designer Robert Blackman created new uniforms for the crew of the Starship Enterprise, completely different from those in the original 1966-1969 series. Furthermore, he had grown so tired of hiding zippers in his previous works that he designed jumpsuits featuring 13 zippers each. The jumpsuits were so tight that it was simply impossible to carry anything in the pockets.
  • The series takes place between the years 2151 and 2155.
  • Initially, Captain Archer was going to be named Jeffrey. The producers (Americans) saw no issue with this, but UK fans of the franchise, upon finding out via the internet, pointed out that it would result in 'Jeffrey Archer' (a notorious writer, actor, and politician). The decision was made to change the name to Jackson; however, a Jackson Archer was found to exist. To avoid potential lawsuits, the character was named Jonathan Archer.
  • Initially, the character played by Jolene Blalock was planned to be named T'Pau rather than T'Pol. This was the name of a character in an original 'Star Trek' episode from 1967 written by Theodore Sturgeon (1918-1985). The name was changed at the very last moment because otherwise, royalties would have had to be paid for every use of the name in the series—meaning in every single episode.
  • According to the franchise's official chronology, the series begins 10 years before the founding of the United Federation of Planets, 90 years before the events described in Jonathan Frakes' sci-fi film 'Star Trek: First Contact' (1996), and 213 years before the events of the series 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' (1987-1994).
  • The series includes footage filmed on another planet. This refers to the Sojourner rover, which operated under NASA's 'Mars Pathfinder' program. These clips were shown during the opening credits.
  • During the opening credits, Alan Shepard (1923-1998) is shown on screen; he was the first American to perform a suborbital spaceflight and later the commander of the Apollo 14 spacecraft. The film also features archival footage of Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974) next to the Spirit of St. Louis, NASA's Enterprise shuttle, Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) by her aircraft, the Wright brothers' flight, Robert Goddard (1882-1945), Chuck Yeager and the experimental Bell X-1 aircraft in which he broke the sound barrier on October 14, 1947, and astronauts Neil Armstrong (1930-2012), Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins boarding Apollo 11 to soon become the first humans on the Moon. The astronaut shown in open space next to the space shuttle is Bruce McCandless II, who was the first in history to test a Manned Maneuvering Unit during extravehicular activity.
