Short description

Pablo is a man with a natural ability for business. Early in his life, Pablo is introduced to the business of cocaine and the power it yields. A young life of crime lands Pablo in and out of jail as he builds his criminal empire. Pablo expands his power through politics but it is not long before his conflicts as a Congressman and a drug lord collide. Pablo has his enemies executed, but not before the United States activates its own war on the Medellin cartel.

What's left behind the scenes

  • At the end of the series, actual archival footage of Pablo Escobar's body is shown.
  • Throughout the series, the viewer is led to believe that Pablo Escobar's mother always knew everything about her son's criminal activities. However, in the documentary "Pablo Escobar's Secret Files," she stated that her son never told anyone what he was actually doing.
  • Cartel members use, among other weapons, M4 carbines (a modern version of the M16 rifle adopted by the US Army). M4 carbines did not exist until 1994, yet Pablo Escobar was killed in 1993.
  • The series truthfully reflects events from the life of Pablo Escobar, although some names and nicknames were changed. This nuance has been repeatedly criticized, yet all the altered names and nicknames are connected to the originals in one way or another. For example, the real nickname of Escobar's last bodyguard was Lemon, while in the series it was changed to Citrus. The group of conspirators shown in the series called MR-20 was based on a real-life prototype—the guerrilla organization M-19, or the April 19 Movement (Movimiento del 19 de Abril).
  • In depicting Colombia between the 1970s and the late 1990s, the series uses newsreel footage and newspaper photographs.
  • Andrés Parra was so convincing in the role of Pablo Escobar that he was subsequently approached numerous times to play Escobar in other series and soap operas about drug trafficking. He was paid substantial fees, but over time, Parra began to notice that he was becoming a one-role actor.
  • The actors cast in the series were provided with newsreel footage for study, showing not only Pablo Escobar himself but also members of his family, as well as recordings of his interviews and public speeches. This helped the actors gain a deeper understanding of their characters.
  • Filming the entire series took 10 months.
  • Most of the costumes and attire shown in the series were modeled after the clothing worn by Pablo Escobar and his associates in newsreel footage.
  • Anderson Ballesteros plays one of the most prominent gunmen in Pablo Escobar's criminal organization. At the very beginning of his acting career, he played a gunman in the crime drama 'The Virgin Assassins' (Barbet Schroeder, 2000), where his character hints that he once worked—albeit indirectly—for Pablo Escobar.
  • The series was worked on by screenwriter and executive producer Camilo Cano and producer Juana Uribe. Both Cano and Uribe have direct ties to Pablo Escobar. Cano is the son of Guillermo Cano, the editor of the newspaper El Espectador, who was shot dead in December 1986 on Escobar's orders. Uribe is the vice president of the Caracol TV network and the daughter of a former Minister of Education who was kidnapped on November 7, 1990, but subsequently released. Additionally, she is the niece of Luis Carlos Galán, a journalist and former presidential candidate murdered on Escobar's orders.
