What's left behind the scenes

  • When the character named Methos was first being created, it was intended that he would be purely episodic. Specifically, there was an idea to show a meeting between Methos and MacLeod, where the former would leave the latter records of his own 5,000-year past. After that, weary of life, he was supposed to die. When Methos finally appeared on screen, it was intended that he would perish in the finale of the third season, but the popularity of the character, played by Peter Wingfield, was so great among the audience that the show's writers decided to make him a recurring character.
  • In episode 19 of season 4, when Duncan falls from the tower, the shadow of the cameraman stepping to the right is clearly visible.
  • In season 6, episode 5, when Kira fights Miloš Vladić, her sword is pressed under the general's chin. In the next shot, it is against his neck.
  • Over 400 actors auditioned for the role of MacLeod, and Adrian Paul happened to be the very first. Ultimately, Dutch actor Derek De Lint was cast in the role, but he left the project during the pre-production process.
  • The character Matthew McCormick (an immortal who works for the government hunting serial killers) was created specifically for actor Eric McCormack. The show's creators even considered making a spin-off featuring him, but the idea never materialized.
  • Initially, Christopher Lambert asked for only $50,000 to appear in the pilot episode, but one of the French investors protested that this was too much, and Lambert was written out of the plot. Then the German investors made a fuss, and Lambert was brought back into the story, but he grew so tired of all the commotion that he refused to film altogether. In the end, he received $500,000 for three days of filming for the series.
  • It was originally intended that the series would exactly match the movie and that Adrian Paul would play Duncan MacLeod, but Paul wanted to bring something of his own to the role so that it wouldn't be an exact copy of the image embodied on screen by Christopher Lambert, and the screenwriters accommodated him.
