What's left behind the scenes
- On the side of the mysterious water cooler that appears in several episodes, it says: "H. Maddas." This is the name "Saddam H." written backwards.
- Upon learning that his biological father was not George, but his brother Oscar, Buster begins calling the latter "uncle-father." This is a reference to William Shakespeare's (1564-1616) tragedy "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark" (1600-1601), where in Act 2, Scene 2, the main character says: "...my uncle-father and my aunt-mother are mistaken... I am mad only when it is north-north-east; when the wind is from the south, I can tell a hawk from a heron."
- David Cross was offered the role of Byron "Buster" Blut, but he preferred to play Tobias Fünke.
- The news broadcasts in many episodes are hosted by John Bird. He is a real news anchor in South Carolina.
- All swear words in the series are beeped out. The producers also had to find a way to hide the characters' lips from the camera during the profanity. This was achieved by cutting to another character during the swear word or by filming from an angle where the speaker's lips were not in the frame. In some cases, the actors simply used gestures to cover their mouths.
- David Cross and Jeffrey Tambor were not initially intended to be part of the regular cast. However, this was changed when it became clear how naturally the actors fit their characters' roles.
- When a photo of Rita, played by Charlize Theron, appears on screen before her plastic surgery, it is actually a frame from the crime drama 'Monster' (Patty Jenkins, 2003). For her role in that film, Theron gained nearly 14 kg, and special makeup made her appearance noticeably coarser.
- Actress Amy Poehler, who played Job's bride, was at the time the wife of Will Arnett, the actor who played Job.
- Tobias's fear of being completely naked is a serious psychological ailment called gymnophobia.
