What's left behind the scenes

  • According to Kevin Sorbo himself, he only landed the role of Hercules after either seven or nine auditions.
  • Kevin Smith, who played the role of Ares, also played Iphicles, Hercules' brother. He appeared on screen in this role four times—wearing a wig and clean-shaven, which noticeably distinguished him from his portrayal of Ares.
  • According to Kevin Sorbo, the series ended not because of a drop in viewership, but as a result of contract negotiations. Sorbo himself was willing to continue for one full final season, but the studio management insisted on three. Sorbo did not want to tie himself to a long-term three-season commitment, as he had the opportunity to star in the sci-fi series 'Andromeda' (2000-2005). The studio management refused to budge, and as a result, the final season felt rushed.
  • The role of Hercules could have gone to Dolph Lundgren, but he declined.
  • Xena's look was based on the character played by Bridget Lin in Ronny Yu's fantasy action film 'The Bride with White Hair' (1993). It was originally intended that she would be the protagonist of a three-episode story arc ending in the character's death. However, the producers were considering a spin-off and decided to spare her. The three-part story arc in the series about the adventures of Hercules proved so successful that studio executives gave the green light to create the series 'Xena: Warrior Princess' (1995-2001).
  • While working on the fourth season, Kevin Sorbo began experiencing health problems; he suffered three strokes, which resulted in a 10% loss of vision and forced him to relearn how to walk. The actor's filming schedule for the project had to be made less demanding, certain changes were made to the script, and many guest stars were added to the project.
