What's left behind the scenes

  • Renee O'Connor, in the role of Gabrielle, performed almost all of her own stunts—including a backflip in the episode 'The Abyss,' where she kicks a cannibal in the face mid-air. This stunt was performed without the use of supporting wires.
  • In 2006, Lucy Lawless donated Xena's costume to the Smithsonian Institution.
  • Actress Lucy Lawless partially based Xena's famous battle cry on the wailing of Arab women.
  • Throughout the series, the viewer sees Gabrielle in 7 different outfits: a Greek peasant costume, 3 Amazon costumes, a yellow Indian garment, and 2 bikini costumes.
  • The series initially takes place in Greece, but subsequently moves to Rome, Egypt, China, Japan, Siberia, Norway, North Africa, and India. In addition to Greek mythology, Hindu and Christian myths appear in some of the story arcs.
  • Gabrielle's fighting style combines elements of martial arts, kickboxing, and acrobatics. In combat, she typically uses a staff and a pair of sai (stiletto-like cold weapons that resemble tridents). Both types of weapons are characteristic of Okinawan kobudo (traditional martial arts).
  • Melinda Clarke, who played the Amazon Velasca in the second season, was originally cast in the role of Xena.
  • Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor are blondes. For filming, Lawless dyed her hair dark or chestnut, while O'Connor's hair was almost always dyed red for the first two seasons.
  • Most of the fights in the series take place on the ground, beneath which special mats are hidden to soften the falls.
  • Karl Urban plays Cupid, Julius Caesar, Cora, and Myla in the series.
  • Xena claims to have been born in Amphipolis. This is a village in Greece located on the site of an ancient Greek city of the same name, founded in 437 BC.
  • According to Gabrielle, she is originally from Potidaea. This was an ancient Greek city in Macedonia, founded by Corinthians around the 6th century BC, but after a long siege during the Peloponnesian War, it fell to the Athenians. In 356 BC, Philip II of Macedon reclaimed Potidaea from the Athenians and destroyed it.
  • The name "Xena" comes from "xenos," which in Ancient Greek means "stranger".
  • In 2015, nearly 20 years after the series first aired, it was announced that NBC intended to reboot the show, but without Lucy Lawless. In 2017, it was announced that the reboot would not happen after all.
  • Lucy Lawless plays 6 characters in the series: Xena, Princess Diana, Meg (5 times), Li, Annie Day (twice), and Melinda Pappas.
  • Rene O'Connor plays Gabrielle, Hope (3 times), Janice Covington, and Matty (twice) in the series.
  • During the filming of the 5th season, Lucy Lawless was pregnant, and her pregnancy was written into the script. In the episode 'The God Who Feared a Child', Xena gives birth to a daughter, Eve. The actress's son, whom she named Julius, was born on October 16, 1999.
  • Ted Raimi plays several characters, including Joxer, Jace, Jett, Jack Kleinman, and Gary O'Casey.
  • In the bathroom scene in the episode 'A Day in the Life of Xena', it can be noticed that Gabrielle is wearing a swimsuit, although according to the plot, she and Xena are naked.
