Short description
Wannabe writer Betty Suarez is a plain girl from Queens, who is smart, hardworking and savvy but lacks a fashionable sense of style. When publishing mogul Bradford Meade puts his son Daniel in charge of Mode magazine, he hires Betty to be Daniel's new assistant -- mostly because he knows that she may be the only woman in Manhattan with whom the younger man won't sleep.

What's left behind the scenes
- The series is set in New York, which is also where the pilot episode was filmed. However, the first two seasons were shot in Los Angeles. The production crew only moved to New York at the start of the third season.
- The interior of the Suarez home was created on a film set. For exterior shots, only one wall and a green screen were used, with an entire street later added digitally. This was the approach during filming in Los Angeles. Once production moved to New York, a house located in Queens was used.
- The appearance of the museum of modern art is a slightly modified version of the New England Aquarium building in Boston, altered using computer graphics.
- Fashion TV is mentioned in the series, but this program has nothing to do with the French television channel or series of the same name.
- The character of Faye Sommers is based on Anna Wintour, who has been the editor-in-chief of the American edition of Vogue magazine since 1988.
- The pearl necklace worn by Betty is a replica of the famous necklace of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII of England and mother of Queen Elizabeth I.
- The Suarez family are Mexicans; however, there are no Mexicans in the series' cast. America Ferrera was born to immigrants from Honduras, Tony Plana is Cuban, Ana Ortiz has mixed Puerto Rican and Irish roots, and singer and actor Mark Indelicato has Puerto Rican and Italian roots.
- Producer Silvio Horta claims that the decision to cast Lindsay Lohan in the series was made by the network executives, while he himself was categorically opposed. Lohan signed a contract for six episodes, but it was terminated after the third—that is how difficult she proved to be to work with.
