What's left behind the scenes
- Some episodes contain scenes so violent that the series has never been shown in its entirety outside of Japan.
- When Tove Jansson was shown the first episodes, the animators anxiously awaited her reaction. But she simply exclaimed, "They're just like the real thing!" She was referring to the characters she had created herself.
- When the series was broadcast in Sweden, Tove Jansson insisted on using a version with Finland-Swedish dubbing (referring to the Swedish language spoken in certain regions of Finland) rather than standard Swedish. In Sweden, the variant of Swedish spoken in Finland is referred to as the "Moomin language."
- The Witch and her grandmother do not appear in Tove Jansson's original works; these characters were created specifically for the series.
