What's left behind the scenes

  • The character named Stephen is named after film director Steven Spielberg.
  • The name of Harris's funeral home is a reference to Julie Harris (1925-2013), who played the role of Eleanor in Robert Wise's 1963 film of the same name.
  • Luke's treatment center is called the "Sanderson Clinic." Sanderson is Luke's surname in the 1959 novel by Shirley Jackson (1916-1965).
  • Russ Tamblyn, who played a doctor in one of the episodes, played Luke Sanderson in the 1963 film of the same name. Furthermore, in the series, he is named Doctor Montague after Doctor John Montague, a character in Shirley Jackson's novel.
  • Mckenna Grace, playing the young Theodora, sits by the house reading Shirley Jackson's 1949 short story collection "The Lottery and Other Stories."
  • Mckenna Grace and Kate Siegel (who played Theo at different stages of her life) kept diaries, recording their thoughts and events. Occasionally, the actresses swapped diaries to read and better understand their character at different ages.
  • Shortly after filming began, Kate Siegel discovered she was pregnant. In December 2018, she gave birth to a girl and named her Theodora, after her character.
  • Throughout the entire season, Henry Thomas, who played the young Hugh, wore blue contact lenses. The older Hugh (played by Timothy Hutton) has steel-gray eyes.
  • Shirley was named after Shirley Jackson (1916-1965), the author of the novel upon which the adaptation is based.
  • Exterior shots of the funeral home owned by Shirley Crane and her husband, as well as Theo's guest house, were filmed near the Whitlock Inn in Marietta, Georgia.
  • The first 15-plus minutes of episode 6 were filmed in one long take without any editing or cuts. The entire episode consists of five such long takes, the longest of which is the third, lasting over 17 minutes.
  • The Crane children embody the five stages of grief: denial (Steven), anger (Shirley), bargaining (Theo), depression (Luke), and acceptance (Nell).
  • The Discover Inn motel in Decatur, Georgia, was used as the roadside motel where Hugh takes the children after they run away from home.
