What's left behind the scenes

  • Sadarius Harell gained 21 kilograms for the role of Detective Drew.
  • Filming for the first season took place on the coastal plains of southern Louisiana, where the plot is set.
  • During the broadcast of the first season finale, the HBO Go streaming service crashed due to the massive volume of requests.
  • Matthew McConaughey appeared in three commercials for the Lincoln MKC advertising campaign, remaining in character as his protagonist from the series 'True Detective' (2014). The commercials were directed by Nicolas Winding Refn.
  • Work on the series 'True Detective' began in April 2012.
  • Louisiana, where the events of True Detective take place, is also the home state of the series writer, Nic Pizzolatto.
  • One of the potential titles for the series was "Murder Ballads."
  • Originally, Matthew McConaughey was supposed to play Detective Hart, but after reading the script, he chose the role of the other detective—Cohle.
  • One of the memorable details of the world of True Detective was the product of the Texas brewery Lone Star. Matthew McConaughey starred in the 1996 film Lone Star.
  • The burned-down church from the second episode of the first season was built specifically for the series.
  • The action of the second season moved to California. It was decided to forgo filming in Los Angeles in favor of lesser-known locations that are typically ignored by the press or television. Such a place proved to be the industrial town of Vernon in Southern California, which is referred to as Vinci in the series.
  • Cary Joji Fukunaga served as the sole director for the entire first season of the series. During the preparation for filming, he observed the actual work of detectives from the Louisiana State Police criminal investigation division.
  • The first actor cast for 'True Detective' was Matthew McConaughey, who played the role of Detective Rustin Cohle. McConaughey caught Pizzolo's attention with his performance in the 2011 thriller 'The Lincoln Lawyer,' and the contract with the actor was signed even before the rights to the series were sold to HBO.
  • The detectives travel in a 1995 Chevrolet Caprice—a common vehicle for investigators of that era across many US states.
  • At the beginning of the eighth episode, Alfred Hitchcock's film 'North by Northwest' (1959) is shown on television.
  • The six-minute shootout scene in the episode 'Who Goes There' was filmed in a single take.
  • One of the series' themes is black magic and the fact that Louisiana is the birthplace of Voodoo practice in the US.
  • In Season 2, Episode 3, at the 40-minute mark, a poster for the movie 'Sniper' (2014) can be seen.
  • In the 2012 interrogation scenes with Cole and Hart, the detectives use a SONY NEX5 digital camera to record the statements. This camera is not designed for continuous video recording longer than 10-15 minutes—the sensor overheats, causing an automatic shutdown. Additionally, the camera's battery would not have lasted for the duration of time shown in the interrogation scenes.
  • In Episode 7, during the scene where Rust questions the former housekeeper, he is holding her hand with his right hand. After a change in angle, Rust's right hand is visible in one of the shots, but it isn't holding anything. Later, when Rust and Marty are sitting and drinking beer in a bar, the label on the bottle shifts with every frame.
  • In Season 1, Episode 4, at the 15-minute mark, Marty follows a stripper who is driving a Subaru Legacy Lancaster (BH chassis). This Subaru model has been produced since 1998, but the movie takes place in 1995.
  • In 2002, Marty's wife finds photos of his new mistress on his phone. Phones with cameras capable of producing such image quality did not exist at that time.
