What's left behind the scenes
- Some scenes that supposedly take place in Amsterdam were actually filmed in the city of Leiden. The show's creators decided that Amsterdam looked too modern, whereas the buildings in Leiden have largely retained their original appearance.
- The idea for the series came to screenwriter and producer Jessie Burton while she was on vacation in Amsterdam looking at the Oortman dollhouse in the Rijksmuseum. Afterward, she conducted extensive research into 17th-century life in Amsterdam, including literature, culinary records, paintings from the so-called Golden Age (which reached its peak in the 17th century), maps, and the texts of wills.
- Petronella Oortman once lived in Holland, and her dollhouse is part of the permanent collection of the Rijksmuseum (an art museum) in Amsterdam.
