Looks work on a photograph; at an audition the sound comes on, and that is where many candidates fall away. Speech is judged in the first seconds of the slate, before the scene. The good news is that almost everything here is trainable, and a noticeable result appears in weeks rather than years.
The basics need no teacher, only regularity — fifteen minutes daily beats two hours once a week.
Self-study hits a ceiling in three cases: an accent you cannot hear yourself; articulation issues that need a speech therapist; and tension rooted in psychophysics rather than technique. Then you need a voice or speech specialist — usually not a year-long course but a few targeted sessions with homework between them.
Setting the voice for a large auditorium is a separate task if you intend to work in theatre, and microphone technique is another again if dubbing interests you — we covered that side in Voice Acting for Dubbing and Voice-Over.
The difference is fundamental and shows at once. The stage requires projection to the back row: volume, sharp articulation, enlarged intonation. The camera takes a whisper and catches the smallest shade, so stage delivery reads as overplaying.
An actor with theatre training almost always goes through a period of retuning to camera. That is normal and is solved by recording practice — self-tapes at home included.
The difference is usually audible immediately — and the same exercise is worth doing before every self-tape. Add the finished video to your profile: it is judged before any invitation to a casting arrives.
