An American Haunting is a horror film set in early nineteenth-century Tennessee, where the Bell family begins to experience unexplained disturbances in their home. What starts as odd noises and footsteps grows into something far more aggressive, targeting the family patriarch, John Bell, and his daughter Betsy. The invisible presence torments the household, and the family's attempts to understand and escape it prove futile as the attacks intensify, with the entity eventually threatening John's life. The story draws on events said to mark the only case in American history in which a spirit was held responsible for a person's death.
Courtney Solomon directed and wrote the screenplay, following his 2000 debut Dungeons & Dragons; he would go on to direct Getaway in 2013. The cast includes Donald Sutherland as John Bell, Sissy Spacek as Lucy Bell, Rachel Hurd-Wood as Betsy Bell, James D'Arcy as Richard Powell, Matthew Marsh as James Johnston and Thom Fell as John Bell Jr., among 22 credited cast members. The production, mounted across the United Kingdom, Canada, Romania and the United States, cost 14 million USD and took about 30 million USD worldwide.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 5 out of 10 from roughly 28,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.5 out of 10 from 536 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.8 out of 10 from 66 reviews places it below both audience scores. It runs 83 minutes.
