Danny has spent his life under the control of Bart, a Glasgow gangster who raises him like an animal rather than a person. Kept in a collar and confined when not being used, Danny is let off the leash only to fight, settling Bart's debts through brutal bouts in illegal fight clubs. After a car accident separates him from his captor, Danny wanders into the home of Sam, a blind piano tuner, and Sam's stepdaughter Victoria. Through music and patient kindness, the pair begin to draw out the feelings and awareness that Danny's upbringing suppressed. His old life is not finished with him, however, and Bart's return forces Danny to confront what he has become.

Louis Leterrier directed this British, Chinese, American and French co-production, his second feature after The Transporter and one of two films he released in 2005, ahead of Transporter 2. Luc Besson produced alongside star Jet Li and Pierre Spengler. Jet Li plays Danny, with Morgan Freeman as Sam, Bob Hoskins as Bart and Kerry Condon as Victoria.

Made for about 45 million dollars, the film took roughly 51 million worldwide, a modest return. Audiences have responded more warmly than critics: it holds 7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 112,000 votes and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller base, while the critics' rating stands at 6.4 out of 10 from 131 reviews.
