Upcoming historical drama Women on Trial is set in 1972 France. The story centers on a legal battle involving a young girl and the women who assisted her in obtaining an illegal abortion. Facing a male-dominated court system where the perpetrators of violence often avoid punishment, the defendants place their trust in lawyer Gisèle Halimi. Rather than pleading guilty, Halimi challenges the existing laws to advocate for the rights of women.
The film is co-directed by Yvonnick Muller and Lauriane Escaffre, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Both directors previously worked on Maria into Life in 2022. The production was handled by Gaumont, France 3 Cinéma, and Quad Films. The cast features Charlotte Gainsbourg in the role of Gisèle Halimi, alongside Cécile de France, Grégory Gadebois, Saül Benchetrit, Sarah Suco, and Florence Loiret Caille. With a runtime of 102 minutes, the movie is scheduled for release on November 4, 2026.
