Short description
The story of J. Robert Oppenheimer's role in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II.

What's left behind the scenes

  • For the first time, black and white film was used with IMAX motion picture cameras.
  • According to Christopher Nolan, the idea to cast Cillian Murphy in the lead role came to him when he was looking at a photograph of Oppenheimer on the cover of Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin’s book “Oppenheimer: Triumph and Tragedy” (2005), which served as the basis for the screenplay. In an effort to achieve a greater resemblance to the historical figure, Murphy lost weight and followed a strict diet during filming.
  • Matt Damon took a break from acting for his wife, but with the condition that the break would end if Christopher Nolan called him with an offer to star in a film. Nolan called and offered the actor the role of Leslie Groves.
  • Producer Charles Roven suggested the film idea to Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas, telling them about Bird and Sherwin’s book “Oppenheimer: Triumph and Tragedy.” Nolan was interested and asked to be given the book to read. He was finally convinced by a gift from actor Robert Pattinson at a party celebrating the completion of the action film “Tenet.” Pattinson gave him a collection of Oppenheimer’s speeches.
  • Matt Damon received the script, which was printed on red paper and written in the first person.
  • The footage of the nuclear bomb test used a combination of real explosions and computer technology. The real explosions used a mixture of gasoline, propane, aluminum, and magnesium – and mock-ups. They were filmed at high speed from different angles, and then the images were layered on top of each other to create the mushroom cloud.
