My Lucky Stars

Two Hong Kong police officers, Muscles and Ricky, are sent to Tokyo to track down a former colleague who has made off with a large haul of stolen diamonds. The ex-officer is shielded by a ninja gang, and when Ricky is taken captive during a chase, Muscles turns to his old orphanage friends, a group of small-time crooks known as the Five Lucky Stars. They are reluctant to get involved, but they agree to help free Ricky and settle matters with the gang behind the fugitive.

Sammo Hung directed the film, the seventh of the sixteen features he has directed, following Wheels on Meals and preceding Heart of Dragon. Barry Wong wrote the screenplay, Leonard Ho produced, and Hung appears among the cast as Kidstuff, alongside Jackie Chan as Muscles, Yuen Biao as Ricky, Eric Tsang as Roundhead, Richard Ng as Sandy and Charlie Chin Chiang-Lin as Herb, with fifty-two credited cast members in all. The production was handled by Golden Harvest and Paragon Films.

The film was released in Hong Kong in February 1985 and runs 96 minutes. It took about four million dollars worldwide, a solid return for a Hong Kong action comedy of its time. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 6,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from a much smaller pool of 258 votes, indicating steady viewer approval rather than a strong split between the two audiences.
