No Way Out

In this political thriller, a naval officer named Tom Farrell arrives at the Pentagon for a new assignment and begins an affair with a woman, Susan Atwell. He learns that she is also involved with his superior, Defense Secretary David Brice. When Susan is found dead, Farrell is assigned to investigate the killing, and the inquiry increasingly turns against him as evidence from his own relationship with her comes to light, placing him at risk.

Roger Donaldson directed the film from a screenplay by Robert Garland, who produced with Laura Ziskin. It was Donaldson's second feature as director, following The Bounty and preceding Cocktail. Kevin Costner plays Farrell, Gene Hackman plays Brice, Sean Young plays Atwell, and Will Patton plays Brice's aide Scott Pritchard. Howard Duff and George Dzundza also appear among a credited cast of 26, with 70 crew members credited.

Orion Pictures released the film on August 14, 1987. It runs 114 minutes and is a drama and thriller set in the United States. Produced on a budget of 15 million dollars, it took in about 36 million dollars worldwide, more than twice its cost. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from 55,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 out of 10 from 849 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 7.3 out of 10 from 49 reviews.
