Psycho-Pass: Providence is set in a future Japan where an automated system continuously measures the mental state of the population, flagging anyone whose readings suggest a capacity for violence. Akane Tsunemori, chief inspector of the Public Security Bureau, learns of an incident aboard a foreign vessel and is drawn into a case that grows well beyond its first reports. The affair centres on a scientist, Milicia Stronskaya, and documents she possessed concerning a new surveillance system capable of identifying potential criminals. Pursuing the matter brings Akane back into contact with Shinya Kogami, a former colleague now operating outside the bureau. The truth behind the case threatens the Japanese government and the Sibyl System itself.
The film is directed by Naoyoshi Shiotani and written by Tow Ubukata and Makoto Fukami, with Kana Hanazawa and Tomokazu Seki voicing Akane and Kogami. Supporting roles include Nobuchika Ginoza, Yayoi Kunizuka, Shion Karanomori and Mika Shimotsuki, voiced by Kenji Nojima, Shizuka Itoh, Miyuki Sawashiro and Ayane Sakura. It is the seventh feature Shiotani has directed, following Blood-C: The Last Dark, Psycho-Pass: The Movie, the three Sinners of the System cases and Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector.
Released in May 2023, the film runs 121 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from over 900 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from ten reviews places it somewhat below both audience scores.
