Short description

Morgan Sullivan is bored with his suburban life and his controlling marriage, so when the chance comes to work as an industrial spy, he takes it. Hired by a large corporation called Digicorp, he is given a new identity and sent to business conventions around the country to gather information on rival firms for his boss, Finster. The work turns out to be duller than he expected, and he begins suffering migraines and strange pains at the back of his head. Then he meets Rita Foster, a mysterious woman who tells him Digicorp is not what it appears to be and that its spies are being manipulated. Her claims leave him unsure who he is, which side he is on, and whom he can trust.

Vincenzo Natali directed the film, following his debut feature Cube and a segment in the collective project Paris Je T'aime. Brian King wrote the screenplay. Jeremy Northam plays Morgan, with Lucy Liu as Rita, Nigel Bennett as Finster, and Kari Matchett, Kristina Nicoll and Timothy Webber in supporting roles. The production had a budget of 8 million dollars.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.7 from roughly 33,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from a much smaller number of votes, indicating a modest but fairly consistent response from viewers. A critics' rating of 6.2 from 17 reviews places it close to the audience scores rather than sharply apart from them.

What's left behind the scenes

  • David Hewlett played the role of Virgil S. Dunn. This is a reference to the Roman poet Virgil (70 BC – 19 BC), the guide of the main character in Dante Alighieri’s poem “The Divine Comedy” (written approximately between 1308 and 1321).
