The Little family in New York City decides to adopt a younger brother for their son George, and they come home from the orphanage with Stuart, a small talking mouse who wears a suit and has been waiting a long time for a family. Mr. and Mrs. Little welcome him warmly, but George is unsure how to treat a mouse as a sibling, and the household cat, Snowbell, sees the newcomer as a threat to his place in the home and schemes to get rid of him. Stuart sets out to prove himself a worthy son and brother.
Rob Minkoff directed the film, his second feature after The Lion King and the first of two Stuart Little films he made; M. Night Shyamalan and Greg Brooker wrote the screenplay, and Douglas Wick produced. Michael J. Fox voices Stuart, with Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie as his parents, Jonathan Lipnicki as George, and Nathan Lane and Chazz Palminteri as the voices of the cats. The film mixes live action with computer-animated animals.
Released in December 1999, the film cost about 133 million dollars and took roughly 300 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from 160,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from 4,767 votes, while critics gave it 6.3 out of 10 from 95 reviews, slightly above the audience scores.
