Michael Felgate is a British auctioneer working in New York who falls for Gina Vitale, a schoolteacher. When he proposes, she turns him down, and her explanation is not what he expected: her father, Frank, and much of her extended family belong to an organized crime clan. Gina fears that marrying her would pull Michael into that world. He insists he can keep his distance, and the two go ahead with their engagement.
Once Frank welcomes him warmly, Michael finds himself treated almost as a member of the family. The favors he is asked to do are hard to refuse, and his auction house becomes useful to people who need to move money. Agents take an interest in him, and Michael's attempts to stay honest grow complicated.
The film is a comedy of crime and romance directed by Kelly Makin, following his 1995 debut National Lampoon's Senior Trip. Hugh Grant plays Michael, with James Caan as Frank, Jeanne Tripplehorn as Gina, and supporting turns from Burt Young, James Fox and Joe Viterelli among a credited cast of 56. Robert Kuhn, Adam Scheinman and Marc Lawrence wrote the screenplay, and Elizabeth Hurley was one of the producers.
It was released in August 1999. Made for 75 million USD, it returned 54 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.7/10 from 613 votes, and on TMDB 5.7/10; a critics' rating stands at 5.3/10 from 78 reviews, so audiences and critics landed in similar territory.
