Semmelweis

Set in 19th century Vienna, this historical drama follows Ignác Semmelweis, a passionate and impulsive physician. While working in an obstetric clinic, Semmelweis attempts to identify the cause of puerperal fever, a mysterious epidemic killing many mothers. To save his patients, he challenges established medical theories and introduces antiseptic measures, which leads to conflict with his colleagues who view his methods and personality with hostility. With the support of a nurse named Emma, he works to prove that the medical staff are unknowingly spreading the disease.

The film was directed by Lajos Koltai, following his previous works Fateless and Evening. The screenplay was written by Balázs Maruszki and Anett Kormos. The cast is led by Miklós H. Vecsei in the title role, alongside Katica Nagy, László Gálffi, Tamás Kovács, Blanka Mészáros, and Elek Ferenc, with a total of 50 credited performers.

Produced in Hungary by Film Positive Productions and Szupermodern Stúdió, the movie had a budget of 6 million USD and earned 3 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audiences have given the film positive scores, with a rating of 6.8/10 from 4,100 votes on IMDb and 7.9/10 from 49 votes on TMDB.
