Voyager

Walter Faber is a rational, methodical Swiss engineer working for UNESCO. After surviving a plane crash in Mexico, he learns of events from his past that he had never known about, and the discovery pushes him to reconsider the life he has led. Travelling by ship from New York toward Europe, he meets a much younger woman, Sabeth, and the two begin a passionate affair. Their journey together takes them through France and Italy to Greece, where Faber is forced to confront the consequences of choices made decades earlier, and the orderly existence he prided himself on begins to fall apart.

Volker Schlöndorff directed the film and wrote the screenplay with Rudy Wurlitzer, adapting Max Frisch's novel. It came after The Handmaid's Tale in Schlöndorff's filmography, and Eberhard Junkersdorf produced it. Sam Shepard plays Faber, with Julie Delpy as Sabeth, Barbara Sukowa as Hannah, Traci Lind as Charlene, Deborra-Lee Furness as Ivy and Dieter Kirchlechner as Herbert Hencke, among a credited cast of twenty-three. The production was a German, British, Greek and French co-production.

The film received modest notices, with critics' reviews averaging 5.8 out of 10, close to the 6.2 out of 10 it holds on TMDB from a small number of votes. The divided response suggests a literary adaptation that drew limited audiences rather than a broad success.
