Short description

Thor is the son of Odin, ruler of Asgard, and is set to inherit the throne. His arrogance and reckless behavior lead him to provoke a conflict that his father had long kept in check. As punishment, Odin strips Thor of his powers and banishes him to Earth, where he must live among ordinary people. There he meets a group of scientists studying strange weather events in the New Mexico desert, among them astrophysicist Jane Foster. Stripped of his strength, Thor has to find a different way to prove himself, especially once forces from Asgard threaten Earth.

The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh, the tenth of the eighteen features he has directed in chronological order, following Sleuth and preceding Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Chris Hemsworth plays Thor, with Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig and Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis. Don Payne, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz wrote the screenplay, and Kevin Feige produced for Marvel Studios and Marvel Entertainment.

Made for a budget of 150 million dollars, Thor took in about 449 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from roughly 961,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 out of 10 from around 22,825 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 292 reviews places it close to the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Sir Anthony Hopkins agreed to play Odin, even though he had never read the Thor comics and had no idea about the relevant mythology. He was primarily attracted to the role by the concept of the father-son relationship.
  • To prepare for his role as Loki, Tom Hiddleston trained in the Brazilian martial art of capoeira.
  • Channing Tatum, Charlie Hunnam, Alexander Skarsgård, Liam Hemsworth (brother of Chris Hemsworth), Kevin McKidd, Joel Kinnaman, and WWE champion Paul Levesque were all considered for the role of Thor. Rumor has it that even stars like Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Leonardo DiCaprio were interested in the project. Tom Hiddleston, who played Loki, also auditioned for the role of Thor.
  • In 'Iron Man 2' (2010), Thor's hammer – Mjolnir – was first shown lying in a crater in New Mexico. This was based on the comics, where, during a period following an apocalyptic event in Asgard, Mjolnir was sent to Earth in New Mexico, where it lay until Thor came to retrieve it.
  • In mythology, Sif possesses golden hair (literally forged from gold by dwarves), but in the film she is dark-haired.
  • According to the film's director, Sir Kenneth Branagh, the end credits play against footage of the universe taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. It took a year and a half to create them.
  • Applying Colm Feore's makeup took five hours.
  • The film is based on the comics about Thor, who first appeared in 'Journey into Mystery' #83 in 1962. The character was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby.
  • Tom Hiddleston prepared for the role by following a strict diet both before filming and throughout the entire process, to give Loki a gaunt, yet hungry appearance.
  • A model of the Destroyer's armor was built for the film.
  • The first person to arrive at the sinkhole in his red truck was none other than J. Michael Straczynski – the writer of many highly successful comics, including a very good storyline for the Thor comics.
  • The shooter who preferred a sniper bow to all the rifles in the S.H.I.E.L.D. arsenal – none other than Clint Barton, Hawkeye – is another hero who debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in "Thor". We can hear Agent Coulson refer to him by his last name.
  • For a long time, Jim Carrey was the main favorite for the role of Loki. It was rumored that Josh Hartnett could also have played the main villain.
  • During Thor's interrogation, a scrape under his left eye is visible, which was not there during his arrest. This is clearly seen when the camera shows a close-up of his face.
  • In preparation for the role of Thor, Chris Hemsworth regularly went to the gym for six months, building muscle mass. The actor's physique changed so much that the costume prepared for him no longer fit, becoming too tight.
  • Gemma Arterton and Jessica Biel both auditioned for the role of the main character's girlfriend, Jane Foster. Biel also auditioned for the role of Sif.
  • Daniel Craig turned down an offer to play Thor.
  • In the film, Odin loses an eye in battle with Laufey. According to myths, he gave up his eye himself to drink from the well of wisdom.
  • In 2005, director Matthew Vaughn of "Layer Cake" and "Stardust" was set to direct the film. In the 90s, Sam Raimi wanted to direct "Thor" immediately after "Darkman." Although work on "Thor" never began, Raimi directed three films about another Marvel superhero, Spider-Man.
