Priscilla
Short description
Priscilla follows a teenager living with her family on a United States Army base in West Germany in 1959, when she is invited to a party and meets Elvis Presley, already a rock-and-roll star. What begins as a courtship across the distance between a soldier's daughter and a celebrity becomes a long relationship that moves to his Tennessee estate and eventually to marriage, seen entirely from her point of view. The film is based on Priscilla Beaulieu Presley's 1985 memoir Elvis and Me.
Sofia Coppola wrote and directed, and produced alongside Youree Henley and Lorenzo Mieli. It is the ninth feature she directed, arriving after On the Rocks and before Marc by Sofia. Cailee Spaeny plays Priscilla, with Jacob Elordi as Elvis; Ari Cohen and Dagmara Domińczyk appear as her parents, and Tim Post and Lynne Griffin round out the principal cast. The production involved A24, American Zoetrope, The Apartment Pictures and Fremantle, on a budget of about 20 million dollars, and it took roughly 33 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 6.4/10 from around 54,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7/10 from over a thousand votes. A critics' rating stands at 7.3/10 from 304 reviews, higher than either audience figure.
What's left behind the scenes
- Shortly before filming began, the project lost several sponsors, so some scenes were never shot.
- Elvis Presley Enterprises did not allow Sofia Coppola to use Elvis Presley's songs in the film.
- While preparing for the role of Elvis, Jacob Elordi ate half a kilogram of bacon per day. As the actor himself said, despite his height, it didn't have much of an effect.
- According to Jacob Elordi, before agreeing to filming, he had only heard of Elvis Presley from the cartoon "Lilo & Stitch."
