The Ring Two
Short description
Six months after the events in Seattle, journalist Rachel Keller and her son Aidan have left the city for the small coastal town of Astoria, Oregon, where Rachel takes a job at a local newspaper and hopes to raise her son in peace. Their attempt at a fresh start ends when a teenager dies under circumstances that echo what Rachel witnessed before, and an unmarked videotape turns up near the scene. Fearing that Samara has followed them and that Aidan is in danger, Rachel begins looking into the girl's past once more. Naomi Watts returns as Rachel, with David Dorfman as Aidan, Simon Baker as her colleague Max Rourke, and Elizabeth Perkins, Gary Cole and Sissy Spacek in supporting roles.
The film was directed by Hideo Nakata, the fifth of the eighteen features he has directed in chronological order, following Dark Water (2002), and was written by Ehren Kruger for DreamWorks Pictures. It was made for about 50 million USD and took around 161 million USD worldwide.
Reception was modest. On IMDb it holds 5.4/10 from over 106,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.8/10 from roughly 2,500 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7/10 from 186 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Noam Murro was initially appointed as the director of the film, but was removed from the project due to creative differences with DreamWorks management.
- Richard Kelly also had a chance to direct the film, but was forced to decline. Ultimately, the director of the film was appointed as the creator of the Japanese versions of the horror film – Hideo Nakata.
- As part of the promotional campaign, copies of the "cursed videotape" were uploaded to many resources. After the five-minute clip ended, the internet user was redirected to the official website of the film.
- The psychiatrist mentions a certain Dr. Koji in the film. This remark serves as a reference to the author of the novels that formed the basis for the Japanese 'Ringu', Koji Suzuki.
- Several strange incidents occurred during the filming. On the seventh day of shooting, the office of the film company producing the movie was flooded due to a burst water pipe. As is well known, water plays a significant role in the plot of the film.
- Finally, one morning, the costume designer, leaving the parking lot on the Universal Studios lot (where the studio filming took place), saw a deer running towards her on the asphalt. And although deer are common in these areas, the coincidence of this episode with events in the film, where there is a scene with deer attacking a person, looked ominous.
