Short description

In 1939, test pilot Daniel McCormick cannot bring himself to propose to his girlfriend, Helen. When an accident leaves her in a coma, he volunteers for a cryogenics experiment run by his friend Harry, a scientist working in secret. The plan is to freeze Daniel for a year, but the project is abandoned during the war and he is forgotten. He wakes in 1992, found by two boys who bring him home to one of their mothers, Claire. As Daniel searches for news of Helen, he discovers that the years he lost are catching up with him: his body is aging at a rapid rate, leaving him little time.

Steve Miner directed the film, the sixth of thirteen features in his directing career, following Warlock and preceding My Father the Hero. J.J. Abrams wrote the screenplay, and Bruce Davey produced. Mel Gibson plays Daniel, with Jamie Lee Curtis as Claire, Elijah Wood as Nat, Isabel Glasser as Helen, George Wendt as Harry and Joe Morton as Cameron.

Released in December 1992, the film runs 102 minutes and mixes adventure, drama, fantasy, romance and science fiction. Made for about 20 million dollars, it took roughly 128 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb and TMDB, audience scores sit around the middle of the scale, while the film critics' rating of 5.4 from 24 reviews is lower, indicating a mixed critical response against more favourable viewer opinion.
