Paradise: Love

Teresa, a fifty-year-old Austrian woman, leaves her teenage daughter behind and travels to the coast of Kenya for a holiday. There she encounters a world in which older European women, known locally as "sugar mamas," seek out young African men, and these men, in turn, depend on such relationships for their livelihood. What Teresa hopes to find is affection and romance, but as she moves from one beach to another and from one young man to the next, she is forced to confront the nature of the exchange she has entered into.

Ulrich Seidl directed the film and wrote the screenplay with Veronika Franz. It stands second in the chronological list of Seidl's features, following Dog Days and preceding Venice 70: Future Reloaded, Rimini, Sparta, Wicked Games and Tableaux. Margarethe Tiesel plays Teresa, with Peter Kazungu, Inge Maux, Dunja Sowinetz, Helen Brugat and Carlos Mkutano in supporting roles. The film runs 121 minutes.

Produced by Tatfilm, Ulrich Seidl Filmproduktion and Société Parisienne de Production as a German, Austrian and French co-production, Paradise: Love was made on a budget of about four million dollars. On IMDb and TMDB, viewers rate it at 6.7 out of 10 from 234 votes, while a critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 47 reviews places professional opinion close to the audience response.
