Rapa Nui is set on Easter Island, the remote Pacific island whose inhabitants called it Rapa Nui. A rigid social order divides the long-eared ruling class from the short-eared workers who are forced to carve and raise the enormous stone statues, and once a year the clans compete to bring back the first egg of a migratory seabird. Victory makes the winner's chief the island's Birdman for a year, the most powerful position in their world. Two young men, Noro and Make, are set against each other both in that contest and over Ramana, a woman from the lower class. Noro, the son of a ruling chief, loves her, while his childhood friend Make wants her as well.
Kevin Reynolds directed the film, which came after Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and before Waterworld in his filmography. The screenplay is by Tim Rose Price and Reynolds, and Kevin Costner and Jim Wilson produced. Jason Scott Lee plays Noro, Esai Morales plays Make, and Sandrine Holt plays Ramana, alongside Eru Potaka-Dewes as Ariki-mau. The production was made on a budget of about 20 million US dollars by Warner Bros. Pictures with Tig Productions, Majestic Films International and Newcomm. It runs 107 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 from around 5,700 votes. On TMDB it also rates 6.4 out of 10, from roughly 165 votes.
