The Road to El Dorado
Short description
Two Spanish con men, Miguel and Tulio, flee after a gambling scheme goes wrong, accidentally stow away on a ship bound for the New World, and eventually wash up on the shores of El Dorado, the legendary city of gold. Its inhabitants mistake the newcomers for gods, and the pair enjoy the luxury that follows. Their friendship is tested when they must choose between taking the city's wealth and protecting the people who welcomed them. The film is set in the sixteenth century and features the conquistador Hernán Cortés.
The Road to El Dorado is an animated adventure comedy released in 2000 by DreamWorks Animation and DreamWorks Pictures. It was directed by Bibo Bergeron and Don Paul, from a screenplay by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, with Brooke Breton and Bonne Radford producing. It was Bergeron's first feature as director; he later made Shark Tale and A Monster in Paris. The voice cast includes Kenneth Branagh as Miguel, Kevin Kline as Tulio, Rosie Perez as Chel, Armand Assante as Tzekel-Kan, Edward James Olmos as Chief, and Jim Cummings as Cortés.
The film runs 90 minutes. Its reported budget of 95 million US dollars exceeded its worldwide box office of about 76 million. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 118,000 votes and on TMDB 7.3 out of 10 from over 4,000 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 105 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The sacred book of the priest Tzekel-Kan contains a drawing of a man fishing from the moon, parodying the well-known DreamWorks logo.
- Voice actors working on animated films usually work individually, but contrary to this tradition, all dialogue between the characters played by Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline was recorded together by both actors.
- The persistent armadillo that harasses the heroes throughout the film was named Bibo in honor of director Bibo Bergeron.
- A whole series of sequels to the animated film was planned, but after its box office failure, all those plans were immediately scrapped.
