Dinosaur
Short description
Set in the late Cretaceous period, roughly 65 million years ago, the film follows Aladar, an iguanodon separated from his own kind as an egg and raised by a clan of lemurs on an island. When a shower of meteors devastates the landscape, Aladar and his adoptive family flee to the mainland and join a herd of dinosaurs searching for a place to settle. Water and food are scarce, predators pose a constant threat, and the herd's leader, Kron, drives the animals hard and expects stragglers to be left behind. Aladar's refusal to accept that order brings him into conflict with Kron and puts him at odds with the group's way of surviving. The film is an animated adventure drama from Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Feature Animation and The Secret Lab.
Ralph Zondag directed, with Eric Leighton; Robert Nelson Jacobs and John Harrison wrote the screenplay, and Pam Marsden produced. Zondag's directed features in chronological order are We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story, this film and Shimmy: The First Monkey King. Among the 34 credited cast members, D. B. Sweeney voices Aladar, Alfre Woodard voices Plio, Ossie Davis voices Yar, Max Casella voices Zini, Hayden Panettiere voices Suri and Samuel E. Wright voices Kron. Made for a budget of 128 million USD, it took about 354 million USD worldwide, a strong return on that cost. On IMDb it holds 6.4/10 from 73,000 votes and on TMDB 6.6/10 from 2,823 votes, while critics gave it 6.3/10 from 121 reviews, broadly in line with audience opinion.
What's left behind the scenes
- A plot hole that some pointed out concerned a herd of dinosaurs that produced offspring, but for some reason did not remain in the area after the birth of the young. The reason was that severe cold set in during the winter period, and the land was barren, forcing the herd to leave.
- Initially, directors Eric Leighton and Ralph Zondag intended to make a Tyrannosaurus Rex the main antagonist, however, due to the release of Steven Spielberg's 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park' in 1997, they switched to a Carnotaurus, but the Carnotaurus was made larger than they actually were.
- Initially, it was assumed that the film would not have any dialogue at all, however, the head of Disney, Michael Eisner, insisted on including it in the script.
- An Oviraptor steals a surviving egg from Aladar. According to modern research, Oviraptors, contrary to their name (literally “egg thieves”), did not steal eggs from other nests.
- The coastline over which a pteranodon flies with an egg resembles the landscape of modern Australia.
- The backdrop of the film consisted of photographs of exotic locations in Venezuela, Tahiti, and Hawaii superimposed onto the image in the frame.
- Initially, the film was to open with a shot of a meteor moving through space, but this idea was abandoned when it was used in Michael Bay's adventure film "Armageddon" (1998).
