Once Upon a Time in China III

Wong Fei Hung travels to Beijing with his student Leung Foon to find his father, who is involved in a martial arts tournament organized by the Empress. The contest pits rival schools against each other for the title of Lion King, and Wong's father's school is among the competitors. A visiting relative, the 13th Aunt, becomes entangled with a foreign diplomat who is part of a conspiracy against the Governor, and a film camera she receives captures evidence of the plot. When it emerges that the assassination is planned to take place during the lion dance competition, Wong enters the contest to stop it.

The film is the third entry in Tsui Hark's Once Upon a Time in China series, with Jet Li returning as the folk hero Wong Fei Hung. Rosamund Kwan, Max Mok Siu-Chung, Xinxin Xiong and Shun Lau appear alongside him. Tsui Hark directed from a screenplay by Tan Cheung, and the production was handled by Orange Sky Golden Harvest and Film Workshop. It was the twelfth of the thirty-one films Tsui Hark has directed in chronological order, arriving between The Master and Green Snake.

Released in Hong Kong in January 1993, the film took about 28 million dollars worldwide, a strong result for a martial arts picture of its period. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 8,200 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 from 231 votes, indicating a steady following rather than a broad one. A critics' rating of 5.8 from eight reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
